Jess Skelton is an award winning artist with a background in psychology and production pottery. Her work is sourced in the vessel and employs playful and disruptive techniques that push the material up to and over its limits.

Jess works predominantly in clay with the backdrop of a multiplicity of media as inspiration and process, She is particularly drawn to photography, old boatyards, coastal erosion, detritus, graffiti and the colours of toy cars.

An identification with precarious existences and marginalised communities underpins the work. Jess is particularly drawn to what she calls ‘The Shadowlands, physical spaces out  beyond society's polished facades where the natural world exposes and reclaims humanity’s interventions.

She also simply loves the physical actions of making in clay and chucking colour at it.

Jess is interested in the dichotomy of being someone that makes both abstract sculptural work and functional ware. She works at the historic Farnham Pottery where she teaches throwing and expressive surface decoration alongside making her own work.
