Jess Skelton's work is sourced in the thrown vessel referencing the ages old heritage of vessels in pottery and her own maritime roots. Porcelain, classically associated with finesse and opulence, is stacked with roughly hewn bases inspired by coastal erosion, before being defaced with colour and symbolism reminiscent of graffiti. The work elevates overlooked elements of society, looking beyond shiny facades and reflecting on the precarious resilience of marginalised communities. Jess is particularly drawn to what she calls the 'shadowlands', semi wild post urban spaces where the precarity of the relationship between humanity and nature is evident.
